A unique experience to reach the highest altitudes of Mount Etna and witness up close the activity of Europe's most imposing volcano.
The day begins with pick-up at your accommodation between 8:30 and 9:00.
We will reach the Sapienza Refuge (1900 m), starting point of the excursion.
From here, the ascent towards the high altitudes of Mount Etna will begin (cable car and off-road bus tickets not included), until reaching 2900 meters (Torre del Filosofo).
We will then continue on foot accompanied by an Authorized Volcanological Guide, crossing an extraordinary landscape of lava, ash, and active craters.
The excursion will take you up to about 3000 meters altitude, at the base of the main summit craters, where volcanic activity is constant and visible:
- active fumaroles
- strombolian activity
- recent lava flows and deposits
We will visit the impressive Barbagallo Craters, formed during the 2002 eruption, and cross historical lava flows, including the one from 1991–1993.
During the return, a pleasant stop is planned at Zafferana Etnea, with a free tasting at a local honey producer.
Tour Itinerary
- 08:30 – 09:00 – Pick-up at hotel, B&B, apartment, port, or agreed meeting point
- Arrival at Rifugio Sapienza, on the southern slope of Mount Etna, at about 1,900 meters altitude
- Ascent to 2,900 meters via cable car and 4×4 vehicles (tickets not included)
- Guided excursion in a volcanic environment towards the summit crater area, up to about 3,000 meters altitude
- Visit to the impressive Barbagallo Craters and observation of the most recent eruptive phenomena
- Crossing of spectacular historical lava flows and breathtaking views of the Etna territory
- Stop at Zafferana Etnea with tasting of typical local products
- Return and drop-off at the accommodation
